▶Michelin had been the dominant tire brand in MotoGP racing from the 1980s through the mid-2000s, when a competing manufacturer began to challenge Michelin's superiority. This led Michelin to begin supplying its partner teams with special, limited-use qualifying tires, with the goal of getting more of its riders toward the front of the starting grid. I produced this Q&A with Michelin's motorcycle racing director to help explain the differences between qualifying and race tires.
